Inca Trail Permits 2022

Inca Trail Peru

There are only 500 spaces available per day, approximately 200 are assigned to tourists and 300 to porters, cooks and guides.

If the number of spaces runs out, you will have to choose another date. If the permits run out on a particular date, no travel agency will be able to offer a space. The Inca Trail permits can only be purchased with the visitor's name and passport number.

One thing to consider is the following: once the reservation is confirmed, there is no option to change the date, name.

What is the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu about?

  • The Inca Trail is one of the most famous walks in the world. Travel 40 kilometers (24 miles) from the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the Puerta del Sol (Intipunku), this is the main gate to the sacred city where the Incas entered more than 500 years ago.
  • The Inca Trail Tours to Machu Picchu lasts only 4 days and travels through mountain passes and cloud forests until you reach the jungle eyebrow of Cusco where Machu Picchu is located. The highest point is the ‘Abra of the dead woman’, at 4,224 meters above sea level (13,860 ft). The lowest point is in Machu Picchu, 2,430 meters from sea level (7,972 ft).
  • In addition to lush landscapes, this hike allows you to see Inca and pre-Inca places, such as: Huiñay Huayna, Phuyupatamarca, Sayacmarca and Runkurakay.
  • Currently, you can only do the Inca Trail by buying permits in advance from an authorized tourism agency. All agencies offer tourists: transportation, cooks (complete food during the walk), porters (carry visitor's luggage), camping equipment, tour guide, entrance to Machu Picchu and transportation back to Cusco.

How many people can travel the Inca Trail each day?

There are 500 permits available for the Inca Trail every day. However, that number is a bit far from the truth since only 200 tourists will be able to enter each day. The rest of the people make up the support team on the route (porters, guides and chefs).

When is the time to book the Inca Trail?

  • The famous 4-day hike can only be traveled in the company of an ‘authorized’ tourism agency. Tours must be purchased approximately 6 months in advance.
  • When availability is released (every October 5), permits begin to run out. This happens especially for the months of May to August (high tourist season).

What are the alternatives to the Inca Trail?

For those people who failed to reserve one of the permits for the Inca Trail, know that there are several alternative routes that lead to Machu Picchu. The most famous is the Inca Trail 2 day, or the Machu Picchu 3 Day Hike.

  • Salkantay Trek - This hike lasts 5 days, 4 nights and travels high mountains such as the ‘Abra of the snowy Salkantay’, at 4,650 meters from the sea (15,255 ft). This adventure is more difficult than the Inca Trail since it covers almost 70 kilometers. It crosses the town of Aguas Calientes to reach Machu Picchu. It is famous for its beautiful landscapes of snow-capped mountains and lagoons.
  • Lares Trek - This hike lasts 4 days, 3 nights and travels through the Andean mountains with traditional villages such as Lares. The highest point on the route is the Ipsaycocha Pass, at 4,350 meters from the sea (14,271 ft). There are many variants of this walk. The most popular route through ‘Patacancha’ travels approximately 37 kilometers. It includes a section by train to Aguas Calientes, from where you climb to Machu Picchu. It is famous for its traditional villages.
  • Choquequirao Trek 4 Days - The archaeological site of Choquequirao is considered the ‘Sacred Sister of Machu Picchu’ due to its similarity to the Inca City. The route that takes there lasts 4 days, 3 nights and is considered one of the most difficult because it runs through the hot Apurimac canyon. Additionally, there is an 8-day hike that continues that route to Machu Picchu. This extreme hike covers 115 kilometers.
  • Inca Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu - The Inca Jungle is the commercial name of an adventure tour to Machu Picchu that includes the practice of sports such as: cycling, walking, boating, zipline and more experiences. It lasts 4 days, 3 nights and includes the visit to Machu Picchu by the Hydroelectric route.

Visit Machu Picchu in Peru: Everything you need to know about the visit!

Machu Picchu : Our tips for visiting the wonder of the world Visit the wonder of the world Machu Picchu : the best tips to make your visit unforgettable! A visit to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru is the absolute highlight for many travelers! No wonder the tickets are in great demand. Over 1.5 million visit Machu Picchu every year! This means an average of around 2,500 tourists per day. In the past, there were even more! For this reason, the Peruvian government had to limit the number in order to protect and preserve the site for future generations. And that's good. Therefore, there are many new rules that you should read carefully here! Unfortunately, there are still far too many tourists at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Worse still, many don't follow the rules. So I very much welcome the changes made by the Peruvian government to limit and regulate the flow even further. Now you will know exactly what you have to consider. If you want to visit the modern wond

Choquequirao: The Hidden Inca City of the Sacred Llamas

Every culture has something else sacred - the Incas did it with the llamas . They immortalized the animals in a hidden city 3000 meters high in the Andes, not far from the famous Machu Picchu . Archaeologists found out: The whole complex points to a Lama constellation. The ascent from the Andean village of Cachora to the ruins of Choqequirao takes almost two days. About 160 kilometers northwest of the ancient Inca capital of Cusco and 3,000 meters above sea level, there is a complex of more than 2,000 hectares that was only slightly inferior in grandeur to its famous neighbor Machu Picchu in its heyday. Today the visitor sees in the " Golden Cradle ", as the name translates, terraces, squares, temples, fountains and canals overgrew with vegetation; only thirty percent of the city has been cleared of the undergrowth. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this place, which is described in Spanish documents as the silver city, was difficult to access and far from larger settlements

Inca Trail Trek - Porters Working

Every year, thousands of people do the Inca Trail . They usually complete the 43-km trail in 4 days. For most of them, the trip is their lifetime experience and fulfillment of their personal ambitions. The satisfaction of having completed the trek and visiting the spectacular Incan city of Machu Picchu is hard to beat. Although, this feeling is even better if you know that all porters helping you along the way have been treated well and with the respect they deserve. Now, most of trekkers are organized by a local tour operator. No draughts are allowed to enter the Inca Trail , only porters. For that reason, all camping equipment (i.e. personal tents, dining tent, kitchen tent, tables, chairs, stove, bottle gas and food) is carried on backs of human porters. Prices of this 4-day trek vary significantly depending on porter´s and other staff´s wages and conditions provided by each company. However, if you try to find out if a company looks after their porters well, it can be quite
